FAA HIMS/Aviation Neuropsychological Evaluations

At Horizon Neuropsychological Services, we conduct thorough neuropsychological evaluations for aviation professionals. We recognize the importance of these evaluations and strive to make the process efficient and straightforward.

Our services:

  • FAA Neuropsychological Evaluations for Pilots: If an issue prevents you from obtaining a medical certification, you will receive a letter from the FAA requiring a neuropsychological evaluation. This evaluation includes the administration of assessments to evaluate cognitive and psychological functioning. The goal of these evaluations is to ensure there are no disqualifying conditions present that could pose a risk to the safety of the aviator and passengers.
  • Tier 2 Evaluations for Air Traffic Controllers: Our Tier 2 evaluations are designed to assess the cognitive and psychological fitness of air traffic controllers. These evaluations help in identifying any potential issues that could impact their ability to perform their duties effectively and safely.

What to Expect

Here’s what you can expect:

Scheduling

After receiving your letter from the FAA, schedule an evaluation with a Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS)-trained and FAA-certified neuropsychologist. Call us at (720) 242-7533 and ask to schedule an aeromedical evaluation. You will first schedule a 15-minute free consultation with Dr. Datoc to review procedures.

Records

Send all records and paperwork to our office prior to the evaluation.

Testing Day

The evaluation process involves an interview and a series of tests designed to assess various aspects of your cognitive and psychological functioning. The results from these tests are used to identify or rule out any conditions that may pose a risk to the aviator or passengers. The evaluation is tailored to the reason for your referral.

Next steps

A report is written, integrating the results from testing with the information obtained from your interview and records, and sent back to the referral source.

*If your evaluation is related to ADHD, a urinalysis for amphetamines and methylphenidate is required by the FAA within 24 hours of your neuropsychological evaluation. Be sure to complete this on your own prior to your appointment.
